This magical Advent Calendar Panel is from the Jolly St Nick collection from Makower, a beautiful collection of gold metallic Christmas fabrics. The panel has full instructions printed at the top to explain how to construct the advent calendar. There are fold lines marked on the panel to show you how to fold the sections up to create the 24 pockets needed for the advent calendar. The pockets feature a variety of traditional Christmas icons including Christmas presents, stockings, baubles, snowmen and robins. Each pocket measures approximately 8cm x 6m, allowing you to insert a small item of your own choice. The top section of the panel features a traditional Christmas scene with Santa and his sack of presents, a fireplace, a Christmas tree adorned with baubles and topped with a gold star. The scene is enhanced with lovely details such as the plate of cookies and glass of milk left for Santa, a cat asleep on a chair, a garland of stars hanging from the ceiling and a robin at the window. These would all make lovely talking points to discuss with a child to enhance their enjoyment of the calendar.
After cutting the panel on the seam allowance lines and folding the advent calendar into position, the calendar will measure approximately 59.5cm high x 59cm wide. The second image of the calendar shows what it will look like once you have folded the pockets into place. You will need a backing fabric for the back of the calendar, so you can purchase a panel match size of the allover fabrics in the collection for this, which will leave you some extra fabric to create a pocket for a dowel rod or to make fabric hanging loops for the calendar. If you are planning to sandwich a layer of batting or fusible fleece between the front of the advent calendar and the backing fabric, you may also wish to purchase another piece of co-ordinating fabric for binding; for instance, you could back the calendar with the cream stars or holly fabric and bind the edges of the calendar with the red or green stars fabric. The instructions on the panel suggest using backing fabric and wadding 4 inches larger than the panel, so you may want to order a metre rather than the panel match size if you are going to sandwich the calendar with wadding.
The other fabrics available from the collection include a box panel with 40 individual blocks, a holly print on cream and star fabrics on red, green and cream, all enhanced with gold metallic elements.
